Happy International Women’s Day (IWD)! Today’s the day where we celebrate the incredible work, strengths and achievements of females around the world. As the first female Director at Xcede, I am delighted to have joined the business and to be here to celebrate IWD.
For me, International Women’s Day is about celebrating how far women have come and the challenge we all face to achieve gender equality. It’s a responsibility we all share and play a role in and through inclusive events like today, we will change the future for the better.
I often get asked about my career journey when training future leaders or at a panel discussion and the reality is, I haven’t been especially unique in my career journey. My story is one of hard graft, growth mindset and never giving up. I truly believe if you can master your personal levels of resilience whilst always being curious (yes ask those annoying questions) in both your professional and personal life, you can achieve pretty much anything you set your mind to. I think the challenge today, is how you do that in an ever changing, shrinking and competitive world.
I thought I’d share some of my top tips and advice so far from my career. These are for everyone and anyone not just females.
My tops tips and recommendations:
Surround yourself with successful people (women and men)
There are many at Xcede, so we are lucky but it’s great to find people outside of the organisation. I regularly attend networking groups such as #wearethecity, Cityparents, HR specific forums and new book launches. I look for events where I can truly meet people I wouldn’t normally come into contact with or fellow professionals I can learn from.
I have a few membership groups I often speak at, the last one was the corporate research forum in January. This is not only great for your brand profile, but you get to see what’s happening in the market and what other organisations are doing!
Seek out a mentor
No-one is the finished article, everyone can learn something. I have active mentors (and mentees who I mentor) who can offer me different support from my work, friends or husband. Last year I attended an event and was fortunate enough to be mentored by Jacqueline Gold (Ann Summers CEO) on “authenticity in the boardroom”.
These are all things that have helped me personally and in my career. We need to continue having an open and honest discussion and encouraging the conversation, especially in the workplace. Empowering women and creating a balanced workforce should be an aspiration in every organisation. Here at Xcede we are coming together to celebrate International Women’s Day by taking part in #BalanceforBetter promoting the importance of the day, celebrating our role models and inspiring our employees. Together we can face the challenge of gender equality and change the future for the better.
